As you can probably tell, I’m a big fan of baked oats. More specifically, I’m a fan of oats in general for their nutritive qualities, mood-stabilizing effects (especially when taken as milky oats) and excellent, comforting mouthfeel.
Baked oats are a hit because for some reason, they remain edible at times when it’s generally too hot for any kind of moist, warm cereal- even though I tend to eat mine hot right out of the oven. I’m guessing it’s because most of the moisture has been baked out, and given that it is not a milk or water based concoction as boiled oats would be, it’s less dense.
However, today’s breakfast is plenty dense in its own way! A real heavyweight of macros, this is an awesome energy-boosting meal that’s quick and easy to prepare. The focus is evenly split between energy-supporting calories and energy-harmonizing herbs resulting in an all-round delicious starter for an active body. This recipe was actually inspired by the ‘vegan snickers’ flavor craze, but naturally I went and superpowered it with nutrients beyond recognition, lol. It’s just as delicious but twice as good for you (and a bit more fibrous to help balance out the sugars and keep the glycemic load low). Read on for this awesome breakfast that has a delicious filling, too!

The medicinal stars of this recipe are:
Reishi (Lingzhi / Ganoderma): This mushroom is an absolute legend of longevity, used for thousands upon thousands of years for its ability to support a healthy immune system, a clear mind and an extended lifespan. While this extensive historical usage is rooted in TCM, contemporary scientific studies suggest that some of these properties may be attributed to Reishi’s adaptogenic nature and the power of various alkaloids that help modulate the immune system. Reishi promotes mental clarity and brain health and is used to protect the body from susceptibility to disease.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii): Usually offered as a powder of the ground up root, Maca is a Peruvian native in the Brassicaceae family that is known to balance the hormones in such a way that it is often used to increase energy levels and support fertility and virility (which is why it is also known as an aphrodisiac in some cases). It’s often sought out by those looking to increase their endurance or recover from things like PCOS, and has a sweet, nutty aroma.
Cacao (Cacahuatl / Malvaceae ): Widely prized for the candy made from the powder of its fruit, Cacao is another long-storied medicinal plant elder with an extensive history. Energizing and also sometimes considered an aphrodisiac (especially when eaten in its raw fruit form) this plant offers a wealth of antioxidants, minerals, theobromine and a modest amount of caffeine.
