I’m not sure just when I became confident in my cartomancy, but if I looked back through my divination journal I’m sure I could find the turning points.
One of the common stepping stones and features of the spiritual path, divination is certainly (in my opinion) one of the more easy and rewarding ones. After all, despite the utter beauty of the mystery we experience on this path, a lot of the journey is actually deeply challenging- especially for those answering the calling of medicine folk, healers, shaman and teachers of that like.
Divination is a way of getting out of your own way, your own ego-mind, and connecting to higher consciousness. While many people connect with divination through a medium and are content with that (totally understandable!) some of us prefer a hands on approach to this cosmic mirror.
For me, learning cartomancy was just a matter of practice rather than study, for the most part. If you do it enough, you will get better at it, reading a whole lot of books isn’t necessary- though if you like to, go for it! There are also lots of sites and apps made to help you- Labyrinthos decks come with access to the app which can be a really useful reference to use with your readings. My biggest suggestion, though? Keep a journal for your readings.
Write down the cards and your interpretation of each one’s meaning, then look over it again and see how the cards all connect in a narrative. For example, if the Death card comes up in the ‘subconscious/instinct’ placement in a Celtic Cross reading, then you might feel its apt to say ‘Deep down inside, I’m craving a transformative ego death’ or whatever comes up for you. The Seven of Swords in your recent past might be written as ‘I’ve just recently gone through finding out someone has been lying to me’. As you narrate and then re-read what you’ve written, you’ll simultaneously be studying the cards as well as finding the clarity you sought.
(As a side note, this form of journaling in the first person and tense is also an excellent way to improve dream recall.)
Of course, sometimes using a medium serves the same purpose as using the cards in the first place- putting your own ego aside, getting out of your own clouded mind, and using something (or someone) external as a mirror to gain clarity. After all, even professional diviners use or have sought the expertise of another at some point in time!
